The use of certain colorants in finger paints is restricted to protect human health. The current European standard (EN71-7) contains test methods for finger paints and a list of approved colorants.

However, the standard is currently being redrafted by the European Committee of Standardization (CEN). ETAD was invited to contribute to the draft by CEN due to our expertise in this area.

ETAD supports the proposal to redraft the standard. We believe that the publication of an approved list of colorants requires that the colorants be subject to purity criteria. We believe that the analysis of impurities must be performed on the final finger paint to take into account other additives that may have been included during the manufacturing process. Finger paint manufacturers who buy high-quality colorants from ETAD member companies will be able to assure their customers that the colorants comply with existing international legislation.
